AGITATION is an experimental exhibition exploring photographic fallacies, pushing the perceived boundaries of the medium. Allison DeBritz, Tara Holmes, and Owen Barensfeld serve as artists and curators, working collaboratively to create a show that holds their work in conversation with one another. AGITATION shakes up conformist ways of presenting photographic work by rejecting conventional exhibition decorum. The artists utilize forgotten space in the gallery, installing work in crevices, below eye level, and on the ceiling, inviting viewers to actively weave through the space. They embraced a looseness rarely seen in the fine art world, choosing to install their work in an evocative, collaborative manner, rejecting the classic group show format.

AGITATION invites the viewer to challenge their preconceived notions of what photography can be—the show title itself is a double entendre referencing the highly specific process of developing film while evoking feelings of discomfort and anxiety associated with being in an agitated state. The synchronicity of DeBritz, Holmes, and Barensfeld’s salient work disturbs tradition and upsets expectations while asking the question, “What is photography?”.
